The Young, skilled NAIT Ooks Women's Volleyball led by Coach Benj Heinrichs are set for the 2017-2018 ACAC season and will be looking to build on last year's development hoping to have another successful season
With ten 1st-year student-athletes, the 2016-2017 season was certainly a building year. However, the Ooks exceeded expectations, finishing 12-12 and making the playoffs before losing a hard-fought quarter-final to the Red Deer College Queens at the ACAC Championship tournament.
"We knew we were going to improve a lot, but to have four or five rookies in the starting line-up every match and be able to compete with the best teams in the ACAC, was more than we could have expected," said Head Coach Benj Heinrichs. It was really exciting to see the growth and having the opportunity to play in a pressure-packed playoff game was awesome."
With 11 returning players and two 1st-years, the Ooks are looking to take another step towards competing for an ACAC Championship. It certainly won't be any easier in the toughest conference in Canada, but they expect to improve on last year's results and be in the hunt for a medal by the end of the season.
"We have a really special group of student-athletes this season. Collectively they have a phenomenal attitude and are committed to making this an awesome year. The players all worked hard in the off-season and are looking forward to the season," said Coach Heinrichs. "Although we're still a young team, the experience and confidence we gained last season will help us with our goal of competing for an ACAC Championship."
The NAIT Ooks will open up their season this Friday as they head to Concordia to face the Thunder and then return home on Saturday where they will host the Thunder in their home opener at 1:00 pm in the NAIT Gymnasium.
