A Semester of Success: NAIT Ooks Athletics Fall Recap

This term is about to end, and the sports season will go on winter break, which is why it is the perfect time to make a recap of all the sports and where they stand at this point.
Men's Basketball
The men's basketball team had an outstanding first half. Out of 11 games, they won 8 and finished tied for first in the North Division with 16 points. Peter Kugba-Nyande led the league in field-goal percentage at 66.2%, while Serhat Chen claimed fourth place at 56.5% and also ranked seventh in assists. Overall, the team scored 338 points across their games, showing consistency and strong teamwork.
Women's Basketball
The women's team also delivered an impressive season with an 81.8% win rate. They played 11 games and won 9, tying for first in overall in the north. Dior Sellars is sixth in assists, Rory Vandermeer stood out defensively, and is tied for eleventh in that category. Offensively, Mikah Reed and Payton Neilson ranked seventh and eighth in points per game. The team finished the first half with 281 total points.
Men's Volleyball
The men's volleyball team wrapped up the first semester in second place, winning 6 of their 9 games for a total of 12 points. Mason Groski leads the league in assists with an average of 10.05 per set. Koda Dunfield is ranked fourth in digs per set, on top of that Finn Howard is sitting fourth in hitting percentage at .477. Defensively, and Josh Annett is second place in blocks per set with a strong 1.00 average. The team accumulated 405 kills throughout the first half.
Women's Volleyball
The women's volleyball team dominated the first half, finishing first overall. They won 8 of 9 games, earning 16 points and an 88.9% win rate. Rachel Mallet is the top of the league for both kills and kills per set with 148 total and a 4.23 average. Katie Nashim is following close behind, placing third in both categories with 120 kills and 3.43 per set. Racquel Lussier is second in digs and digs per set, and Lexi Gedny is securely in second place for assists per set. The team ended with 398 kills and 534 points.
Men's Hockey
The men's hockey team faced a challenging first half, winning 3 of their 12 games. Ty Whitford earned recognition with 7 goals, additionally, goaltender McCoy Bidewell stood out by placing second in total saves, fourth in goals-against average, and fifth in save percentage. As a team, they have scored 38 goals overall.
Women's Hockey
The women's hockey team is in third place overall with 22 points. Maria Ayre is second in total points and third in goals scored. Grier Slabaida follows closely in both categories, landing in third and fourth place. Goaltender Jorja Imrie delivered a standout first half, appearing in four major rankings, including goals-against average, saves, save percentage, and win percentage. The team ended the term with 43 goals and 69 assists.
Men's Soccer
The men's soccer team had a remarkable season, finishing second overall just one point behind first place with 8 wins and 4 ties in 12 matches. Their success came from strong communication and adaptability on the field. Goalkeeper Parys Ona MacArthur earned recognition across multiple categories, including save percentage and goals-against stats. Peter Jones placed eighth in total shots with 23 attempts. Their hard work paid off as the team won gold at the ACAC Championship and bronze at the CCAA Championship in Montreal.
Women's Soccer
The women's soccer team matched the men's success with 11 wins in 15 matches, finishing second overall. Jyla Micael Erandio recorded 13 goals good for third in the league and also placed fourth in assists. Carly Speelman ranked third in goals-against average, and Alise Rahime secured third place in total shots with 34. The team capped their season with a silver medal at the ACAC Championships.
Cross-Country
The cross-country team performed consistently throughout the season. The women's team placed second in both the first and third races, and third in the fourth race. After the championship on October 25, four athletes Brynn Herbert, Marrin Johnson, Noah Hoffart, and Taylor Hudak qualified for Nationals, where they competed on November 7 and 8 with strong results.
Badminton
The badminton team closed an outstanding first half, finishing first overall with 142 points in the first tournament and 163 points in the second, for a total of 305 points. The tournaments also included men's, women's, and mixed categories. The NAIT Badminton team is first in the ACAC going into the second semester and ranked first overall in the country on the CCAA rankings.

Golf
The golf team competed in two regional tournaments and the championships this season. The men's team placed first in the first regional tournament, fourth in the second, and second at championships. The women's team finished second in the first regional tournament, fourth in the second, and third at championships. The men's team fought hard in the CCAA National tournament but didn't come home with any hardwear.

Curling
The curling team ended the first semester with the following results: first place in the men's tournament, sixth place in the women's tournament, and second place in the mixed tournament. They play their second bonspiel at home at the beginning of January!
